Beyond The Bar: A Day Around Rosebery

The doors of our bar and distillery in Rosebery are open over the Christmas period, and we think it’s the perfect time of year to gather with family and friends over a Distillery Tour, a Cocktail Masterclass, or to enjoy our generous new menu and extra special cocktail list that celebrates our feature spirit: Raw Honey Gin, Harvest 2022. Crafted from the honey produced in the eight rescue hives housed at our Botany distillery in Sydney, it’s a spirit made to sip on during lazy, sweltering summer afternoons.

But before then, there are a few hours in the day to spend, and we reckon the Rosebery neighbourhood is a great place to spend them. It’s gone through many evolutions over the years and is now home to some of Australia’s best fashion, gourmet grocers, undercelebrated eateries and specialty stores. And, of course, Gelato Messina. It would be foolish to not be within an arm’s reach of a Messina in the summertime.

So beyond the bar, here’s where the Archie Rose team is tracing a map around Rosebery.

I start my work days with a takeaway cup of delicate chai latte from the Welcome Dose, which offers a great breakfast selection as well for days when you are not in a hurry. Several lovely lunch spots are worth visiting, from Saliba Brothers with their filling falafel - great value for money, to a proper restaurant experience inThree Blue Ducks. If you fancy afternoon tea, it is very hard to pass by the newly opened Frenchies bakery and not indulge in one of their gorgeous patisseries. For a fun evening with friends, I would recommend one of several craft classes that can be found around Rosebery: Burrata and Bocconcini Making at Omnom Cheese,Cooking class at Vive, or going for a selection of fun classes at Archie Rose like Ceramics, Candle Making or Blend Your Own Gin or Whisky. You can finish up your Rosebery day with a delicious cocktail from Archie Rose Bar or a cheeky Messina gelato, they are open till late.

Relative newcomer Salma's Canteen is a brilliant little cafe-come-deli. Stunning pastries, hearty delicious salads and banging sandwiches are sold alongside a surprisingly large number of awesome things to take home, from whole marinated chickens to loads of relish and spicy sauces to jazz up your home cooking. The whole experience is a slick operation. There's a lot on sale, but it's so elegantly laid out you don't feel overwhelmed at all. All thriller no filler.

My sister Ellie and I have made it a tradition to visit Rosebery when she visits from London each summer. We start with coffee and danish at Black Star Pastry — fuel for the day. Then we pop to the Zimmermann & Camilla & Marc Outlets. Zimmermann is half the price in Australia than it is in London, so my sister likes to stock up! Then, I like to treat her to a Masterclass at Archie Rose — for her last trip, we did the Cocktail Masterclass. Then we end at Messina for our sweet finale, with a special, of course.

The Remnant Warehouse — I love sewing and crafting, and I'm so lucky that there is this fantastic fabric shop only a couple of blocks away. One of my friends is a coffee fanatic, so I always take him to Welcome Dose when he's in the area. My Mum and sister love great food in beautiful restaurants, so Three Blue Ducks is always on the agenda when I see them. My dad loves his craft beer, so Frenchies Brewery is his happy place.
