Smoke is one of the oldest flavours in human history, but in the whisky world, it used to have only one address. If you wanted smoke, you needed peat, and if you wanted peat, you went to the British Isles or Scottish Highlands. That heavy, medicinal brine became the universal benchmark for a smoked whisky, and was the only smoky profile whisky drinkers knew. In turn, the whisky world assumed this was the only way to do it. But smoke is a shapeshifter, and limiting it to a single geography would be a disservice.

At Archie Rose, we are strong believers in the untapped potential of our own backyard. The native landscape has shaped our whisky journey from day one. By stepping away from the traditional peated blueprint, we set out to define what a true Australian smoked whisky could be. By using native Australian stringybark timber instead of Scottish peat, we’ve created a boldly evocative Australian smoke character unlike the medicinal notes found in Islay whisky.

Stringybark became the cornerstone of our new philosophy. It gave us the foundation to challenge everything we knew about smoke, not just how it behaved, but which elements we could transform with it. This mindset drove our earliest innovations, from smoking the water for our Smoked Gin, to more recently, introducing stringybark directly to the cask for our Smoked Cask Series. Together, these trials laid the groundwork for a total mastery of smoke, allowing us to manipulate it across the three core pillars for our new smoked whisky:

How is This Whisky Triple Smoked?

To create one of our most intense profiles yet, we didn't just stop at the grain. We took an uncompromising, three-pronged approach to flavour, drawing character from three distinct sources:

SMOKED MALT

Smoked with native stringybark rather than Scottish peat, our Triple Smoked Whisky aligns with our commitment to sourcing ingredients ethically and locally. Working with Australian farmers and maltsters, we've created a distinct style of smoked whisky, defined by the robust campfire smoke of native stringybark timber.

SMOKED CASK

Tradition dictates that smokiness should come from smoking the barley. Through extensive experimentation, we developed a way to also smoke our casks with stringybark to create a rich, layered and unmistakably Australian whisky, that upholds our desire for flavour over convention.

SMOKED WATER

To complete our smoke-driven process, we drew on the development of earlier products including our Smoked Gin and Ironback Smoked Whisky, both of which experimented with smoked water. The use of smoked water is a big departure from traditional whisky making, creating a spirit that harnesses Australia’s rebellious ingenuity.

A Decade in the Making

Master Distiller Dave Withers explains further; “This whisky was ten years in the making. While tradition dictates that smoke should begin and end with the grain, our pursuit of flavour over the last decade has led us to experiment with smoked water in our 2016 Smoked Gin, smoking native Australian timber such as ironbark and stringybark in our limited edition whiskies, and finally successfully smoking casks in our 2025 Smoked Cask Series.
