Archie Rose Hand Sanitiser Q&A
What is Archie Hand Sanitiser and why are we making it?
In an effort to bolster supplies nationwide and maintain the employment of as many of our team as possible due to the closure of the Archie Rose Bar during the COVID-19 pandemic, we have now reallocated our spirits production capacity to hand sanitiser. The product formulation is based on the World Health Organisation as well as Australian Department of Health guidelines for effective and safe sanitiser via pre-sale on the Archie Rose website.
The product formulation follows the World Health Organisation and Australian Department of Health guidelines for effective and safe sanitiser. It also features a selection of Archie Rose’s 100% natural botanical distillates from its gin production.
Quote from Archie Rose founder, Will Edwards: “Like all businesses and Australians Archie Rose is facing some incredibly difficult times. We’re in a unique position to manufacture this essential product - with the required federal licences, dangerous goods approvals, access to raw materials and expertise - and so we’re now making hand sanitiser our production focus. We will continue to produce sanitiser for as long as we can, or as long as is required and this will also support the redeployment of as many of our full time bar staff as possible to assist in filling, packaging and shipping the product.”
Ingredients: Ethanol (NSW Wheat Spirit), Water, Fragrance (Natural Botanical Distillates), Glycerol, Hydrogen Peroxide.
Natural Botanical Distillates (batch 1): grapefruit, cassia, cardamom and thyme.
Natural Botanical Distillates (batch 2): grapefruit, local honey and raspberry.
Natural Botanical Distillates (batch 3-7): Native finger lime, cassia and raspberry.

When should I expect my order to arrive?
Based on the unusually high volume of orders that ourselves and Australia Post are processing we are experiencing some delays around dispatch and shipping times.
To assist here we recruited 12 more people from the hospitality industry to add to the 15 people re-deployed from the Archie Rose Bar team to our bottling line following the government’s bar shutdown in March. Thank you so much for your support in making this possible.

All other orders placed after 8 May will be dispatched approx. one week after purchase.
We will continue to notify you if those dates change and thanks again on all fronts for your patience.
Can I get a refund?
Unfortunately, we’re unable to issue refunds on this product based on the unique conditions that have lead to its production in response to COVID-19. In essence, as this wasn’t a product we were already making we’ve undertaken financial commitments around raw material purchase and the re-hire of our 15 permanent and casual bar staff as possible to the bottling line (following the forced government bar shutdowns) based on our pre-sale orders. In the last week, we’ve also now added an additional 12 other people from the wider hospitality industry to the bottling line roster. Our apologies that we’re not able to help in this instance and thank you so much for your understanding and support.
Does this product fit WHO guidelines?
We have based our formula on the World Health Organisation as well as Australian Department of Health guidelines that effective hand sanitiser must be >60% ABV, but ensured the product is <70% ABV to allow it to be shipped via all channels, as at 70% ABV or greater we would not be able to ship the product to those who need it.
Is Archie Rose legally allowed to make this?
We have the required federal licences and dangerous goods approvals along with the access to raw materials and production team expertise. The product formulation also follows the World Health Organisation and Australian Department of Health guidelines for effective and safe sanitiser. It also features a selection of Archie Rose’s 100% natural botanical distillates from our gin production.
Has this been tested?
We’ve based the formulation for this product on the World Health Organisation and Australian Department of Health guidelines. The ingredients list is simply: Ethanol, Water, Natural Botanical Distillates, Glycerol & Hydrogen Peroxide (< 3% by volume so as to be excluded from the Poisons Standard). We have not conducted any other testing (other than using the product ourselves) as, based on our research, and the packaging/claims, or lack thereof, we are using, the product does not require it.
Is it for sale at Archie Rose Bar or Distillery?
Yes, we currently have limited stock available to purchase at our cellar door along with our spirits, bottled cocktails and merchandise for takeaway at the Archie Rose Bar.
What colours and formats does it come in?
Based on the very short supply of 500ml bottles from key suppliers around Australia your bottles will be drawn from a mix of colours, formats and lids including 500ml white PET (plastic) with white or black screw cap and clear 500ml PET (plastic) bottles with white or black screw cap. The botanical distillate ingredients may also vary from batch to batch but will still come from the same 100% natural stock we use for our gin production.
Is it a liquid or gel based formula?
Our hand sanitiser is a liquid formula based on the World Health Organisation and Australian Department of Health guidelines and also includes a selection of 100% natural botanical distillates available via our gin production.
Do you have hand pumps or sprays available?
At this stage we’ve only been able to access screw caps and a flip black squeeze lid. All bottling items are otherwise currently in short supply.
Are you manufacturing for medical use and / or is this medical-grade?
The 65% ABV Archie Rose Hand Sanitiser formula is based on World Health Organisation and Australian Department of Health guidelines and also includes a selection of 100% natural botanical distillates available via our gin production. Unfortunately however due to the restrictions that exist around shipping products that are 70% ABV and above, as well as our manufacturing environment not being completely sterile, we are currently unable to produce a formula that is suitable for use in a medical capacity, e.g. hospitals.
Our most sincere apologies, as we appreciate the urgent need for medical-grade sanitiser solutions, but at this stage, we are unable to supply for medical use. We, like all Australians, are incredibly grateful for the continued efforts on the medical frontline during this extremely challenging time.
Are you reserving any for charity?
We’ve created this product to bolster supplies nationwide but just as importantly to maintain the employment of as many of our 20 plus permanent and casual Archie Rose bar and hospitality team as possible, all of whom were impacted by the Archie Rose Bar shutdown mandated by NSW government from Monday 23 March. Once we have further clarity on what packaging supplies may be available to support further sanitiser production we’ll continue to assess what other opportunities this gives us to help others in need.
I’d like to talk with someone re my order, how do I do that?
Please email our customer care team via email@example.com or you can also call us during office hours (9am - 5pm Monday to Friday) on 02 8458 2300.
While like the rest of Australia the Archie Rose team continues to face incredibly challenging times your support of this Hand Sanitiser to date means we have been able to re-deploy all our permanent bar staff members and over a third of our casual bar staff who were stood down as a result of the government’s bars shutdown to our hand sanitiser bottling line. We thank you for your support and your patience and understanding on all fronts.
