To celebrate International Women’s Day, we’re hosting a galvanising line-up of events at the Archie Rose Bar, and you’re invited.
Get familiar with the exceptional work of Alex Elliott-Howery from Cornersmith, City of Sydney Clover Moore Independent team councillor Jess Miller and Dr Lucy Buxton from the UTS—three women leading the war on waste. Hosted by Archie Rose Head of Marketing, Victoria Tulloch, this educational panel will discuss waste from a domestic, municipal and scientific point of view, including the importance of reducing our environmental impact, and the small steps we can all take to make a big difference. Your ticket includes a drink on arrival and a drink during the discussion.
Women on Waste Panel: $49 per person
Duration: Approx. one and a half hours
Class capacity: 40 people
Please note: Any groups larger than six, please email events@archierose.com.au for potential availability.
Alex Elliott-Howery is the co-founder of what has become a thriving and boundary-breaking food community in inner Sydney. She runs the Cornersmith cafes, renowned for their big hearts and strong conscience when it comes to sustainably sourced food. Alex teaches pickling and preserving workshops at the Cornersmith cooking school, the Picklery. She is the co-author of two cookbooks, Cornersmith Recipes from the Café and Picklery and the recent release Salads & Pickles. Alex has a passion for using traditional preserving techniques to reduce food waste in her home and business kitchens.
Jess was elected to the City of Sydney Council as part of the Clover Moore Independent team in 2016. Part of her motivation for being on council was to help ensure that the views of younger people were being represented in local Government (especially with regard to the 24 hour economy). She also wanted to help the City to set a global example of how to deal with the changing climate.
Jess’s key areas of expertise are in environmental systems, specifically urban ecology and urban forestry, and local food systems. She is an advocate for a slow city with lots of active and public transport, character, community, sport, colour and creativity.
Dr Lucy Buxton is a marine biologist, science communicator and strategist. Born in the UK, she has lived, worked, and travelled around the world exploring the sustainability of marine environments and communities that rely on them. Lucy’s jobs have been varied – she has managed large scale field research programs, developed international science research strategies in the university sector, and been helmswoman on a round-the-world sailing rally bringing attention to the effects of climate change on our ocean environments.
A passionate communicator and collaborator, throughout her career Lucy has worked with the public and private sectors to increase understanding or research and support the implementation of sustainable practices in business, management, and governance. In her current role, she is the Industry Engagement Manager in the Climate Change Cluster – a multidisciplinary research institute at the University of Technology Sydney.
